It’s right about that time. The Chicago Bulls are gearing up for their preseason debut against the Milwaukee Bucks. The only thing more fun than watching an NBA game is to analyze it with your friends. Sitting around the couch with a few sodas and chips comparing one duo to the next. However, the Bulls back-court duo’s comparison might not resemble another NBA duo, but they’re spot on to Pixar’s Toy Story’s duo of Woody and Buzz Lightyear.
The story of Toys Story is all too familiar to what the fans are seeing what’s taking place today in Chicago. Woody, a long time hero, was the leader of the Andy’s toy collection. A beloved character by all toys, Woody was on top of the list when it came to Andy’s favorite toy. In this scenario, Andy represents the Chicago fan base while Woody represents Derrick Rose. All was good in Andy’s playroom until the day he brought in Buzz Lightyear.
In this comparison, Jimmy Butler is Buzz Lightyear. From all the love Woody (Rose) has received, all the attention quickly turned to the new man on the block, Buzz Lightyear. With a breath of fresh air in the room, Andy quickly forgot about Woody. With a little jealously in the room, Woody started off on a bad foot with the new star in Andy’s playroom. Which sounds like the beef the media tried to focus on this summer between Rose and Butler.
Woody suddenly became the forgotten toy as Andy left him on the shelf, something Derrick Rose knows all too well since he was metaphorically put on the shelf by the fans during his injuries. However, the plot of the movie changes when Woody and Buzz Lightyear need one another to take down Lotso, which in this case will be Lebron James. It’s not about the individual performance, it’s about working together.
With Butler’s emergence quickly overtaking Rose’s spotlight, it has started a civil war between Chicago’s fan base to pick one or the other. However, as the duo’s counterpart in the comparison would tell you, Woody and Buzz needed to work together to reach their goals.
