Pau Gasol just turned in his two-week notice a good five months in advance. Pau Gasol confirms that he’ll opt-out of his contract at the end of the season to test free agency. Gasol, age 35, is hoping to make on final run at a championship to end his career.
“As long as I keep playing like this. I know I’ll have some options (reference to opting out). I feel pretty good right now physically. I had to take it easier in the preseason so I started a little slower this season than I would’ve liked but because of how I played this summer I had no choice. I had to refuel somehow so I could have enough gas to make it through the entire season and still get to the end with enough and push through so I can play well in the playoffs.” – Pau Gasol
Pau Gasol is arguably the Chicago Bulls’ best player. Despite his old age, Gasol’s skill has allowed him to continue a strong career as he’s averaging 14.4 points per game, 10.8 rebounds per game, and 2.0 blocks per game. Gasol is considered have one of the best team-friendly contracts in the NBA as he signed a three-year deal worth $22 million in the summer of 2014. With the option to opt-out this summer, Gasol intends to explore free agency which can lead him out of Chicago and away from the Bulls’ crowded front-court.
With Pau Gasol essentially turning in his two-week notice before the trade deadline, the Chicago Bulls have the opportunity to trade Gasol if they’re confident in not resigning the 35 years-old Spaniard.
Gasol turned down more money from the San Antonio Spurs in 2014 so he could help Chicago contend for a title.
