One thing is for sure, Bobby Portis is a media goldmine. If he’s not talking in third person, he’s spitting out one-liners to the media.
Bobby Portis who had 23 points on 9-14 shooting in his Summer League debut had a more impressive outing on the defensive-end as he held Karl-Anthony Town to just nine points.
Portis isn’t expected to play Center in the NBA, but Hoiberg wanted to see what big Bobby Portis is made of.
“We said, ‘Let’s throw him at Karl and see what he’s made of.’ I thought he stepped up to the challenge big-time.” – Fred Hoiberg on Bobby Portis
Obviously, one game in a Summer League game is as small as a sample size can get. However, stats aside, there is one thing you can take away from this game. No matter who’s on the opposing end, Bobby Portis is not afraid to take it one-on-one.
“I’m not intimidated by anyone. I’m not worried about a matchup. I’m worried about trying to be best player I can for this franchise”- Bobby Portis
Gar Forman has gone on record multiple times saying he hopes Portis could be an effective stretch-four one day, but it seems that’s how Portis will begin his career. Again, in a small sample size of just one game in the Summer League, Portis has shown he can shoot from long range with comfort.
“I’m a guy that makes shots. That’s what I do. I’m a shot-maker, not taker.” – Bobby Portis
One thing is for sure, whether Portis lives up to the hype or not, Bulls fans don’t have to wait until next year to see glimpses of Portis. Fred Hoiberg, unlike Thibodeau, will probably insert Portis into the rotation if he sees Portis benefiting the team.
