The Bulls are clearly changing their identity this season as an offensive team. The Bulls are averaging over 35 three-pointers attempted per game this season, which over 10.7 more than last preseason in the Thibodeau era. As long as they’re open shots, Hoiberg encourages his team to play the gunslinger style. However, Jimmy Butler knows that in order for him to succeed this season, his defense much be his priority.
“We rely too much on our offense rather than our defense. That can’t happen. It’s preseason. Everybody’s learning.” – Jimmy Butler
Butler asked to grade his defense: “I was never a school teacher so I can’t give you pluses or minuses, it’s aiight. You give me the grade.”

“We can always play better to tell you the truth. We rely too much on our offense than our defense. That can’t happen. It’s preseason, everybody’s learning. It’s all very new to us. That’s what practice is for.” – Jimmy Butler
“Ehh, it’s alright. It’s not good. I’m not gonna say it’s bad by any means. I have to start on that end. I have to let my defense lead to offense. We’ll pick that up on Wednesday.” – Jimmy Butler
Jimmy Butler was never known for his offense until last season. Whether it was high school, college, or the NBA, Butler was always known for his gritty defense. His improved offense played a big role in his maximum contract offer he signed over the summer, but don’t kid yourself if you think Butler didn’t receive that deal mainly for his defense.
While focusing on defense, Butler has one eye on offense as well. His desire to play point-guard has bumped his assist totals this preseason, but his scoring has taken a toll. Of course, it’s only preseason. The concerns will flow in with questionable headlines during the regular season if he’s not able to pick up his offense, but for the time being Butler will focus on his defense which will lead to easy buckets for himself.
